Sustainable Metallurgy: Low Carbon Aluminium (Green Aluminium)
As the world battles the climate crisis, the aluminium industry is undergoing a fundamental "Green Transition." While aluminium is an infinitely recyclable metal, its primary production (electrolysis from Bauxite via the Hall-Héroult process) is inherently energy-intensive. With the implementation of the European Union's "Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism" (CBAM), sourcing Low Carbon Aluminium has evolved from being an eco-friendly choice to a strict commercial necessity.
1.1 What is Carbon Footprint? Why is it Critical?
In aluminium production, the carbon footprint is quantified by the kilograms of Carbon Dioxide equivalent emitted to produce 1 kg of aluminium (kg CO2e / kg Al).
- Global Average: ~16.7 kg CO2e / kg Al.
- China (Coal-based Energy): ~20.0 kg CO2e / kg Al.
- European Average: ~6.7 kg CO2e / kg Al.
- Low Carbon (Green) Aluminium Threshold: < 4.0 kg CO2e / kg Al. (Achieved via Hydro/Wind/Solar energy).
Starting in 2026, for all exports to the EU, the embedded carbon content of the product must be declared. Products exceeding the established emissions limits will be subject to an additional "Carbon Tax". This regulation constitutes a vital competitive parameter for Mertcan Metal's clients in the global supply chain.
